Southern Ocean Surf Reef - A new wave of adventure in Albany!
This incredible addition to Albany's coastline brings a new dimension of adventure for surfers and beach-lovers alike, offering a consistent wave just a short distance from BIG4 Middleton Beach Holiday Park.
What is the Southern Ocean Surf Reef?
Decades in the making, the Southern Ocean Surf Reef is an artificial surf reef constructed with approximately 70,000 tonnes of granite. Located around 120 metres offshore from Middleton Beach, it's designed to generate a consistent left-hand wave, providing reliable conditions for surfers of various skill levels. This landmark project has quickly become a key attraction for our community and visitors.
- The reef is specifically designed to create a more consistent, quality, surfable wave for surfers with beginner to intermediate abilities, with advanced surfers also enjoying it on larger swells.
- It's expected to provide surfing rides of up to 100 metres during average conditions, with surfable waves available more than 40 per cent of the year over the reef, and further surfing opportunities closer to shore.
The surf reef offers a fantastic reason to visit Amazing Albany any time of year. With a reliable wave now available, it's the perfect opportunity to grab your board and hit the water. Beyond the surf, you can still enjoy the tranquil beauty of Middleton Beach, explore scenic coastal walks, or witness the majestic Southern Right Whale migration during the season.
